Dreams are basically a running commentary on the self. Each night we process the previous day’s events in terms of what is meaningful emotionally and intellectually. This material is used for problem-solving, decision-making, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution. The dream imagery reflects the brain’s idiosyncratic programming language known as primary processing. It can be understood or interpreted through the method known as free association. Not all dreams can be understood, but their imagery can be used to inform the dreamer of events, feelings, and issues that may be relevant.
